repair and design future

by RISD museum

Until the 30th of June 2019, you can visit the RISD Museum in Providence, the United States to enjoy the exhibition ‘Repair and Design Future’. “Repair and Design Futures is a multidisciplinary exhibition and programming series that investigates mending as material intervention, metaphor, and as a call to action. In this context, repair is framed as a useful exercise applied to beloved textiles and as a global, socially engaged practice within contemporary art and design culture, addressing environmental and sociopolitical ruptures”.

The exhibition shows a range of objects such as utilitarian American clothes, Indian Kutch quilts, Japanese boro garments, hunter’s ensemble from Mali, a Naskapi Caribou coat and Swiss worker’s trousers. They all reveal darns, patches, and stabilized areas that act as springboards to considering socially engaged design thinking today.
Next, to this exhibition, events will be taken place all in the theme of repair, design and the future such as performances, talks, and workshops.
Repair is the creative destruction of brokenness.
—Elizabeth V. Spelman, Repair: The Impulse to Restore in a Fragile World
